Google.com [9.5]: is it really a PageRank 10 website?

We all know about Google’s PageRank system, and millions of websites are struggling in the war to compete for the top page on the Search Engine:

The Googlego logo

I mean, look it at it. Ten years ago (when Google was not worth $18bi), how would you convince your boss that it would be a good idea to buy stocks from a company whose logo is made out of Lego bricks? That’s why I love Google.

Google scores a clean 9.5 out of 10 from WebSoda’s rating (and don’t forget to vote! I promise it won’t take more than 5 seconds), and is viewed on a daily basis by all voters. I guess it’s really impressive to think that we are so dependent from Google!

I guess it’s no news that Google is ranked so high on WebSoda, but — here’s the real question: Is Google.com’s PageRank 10? If you install their toolbar, you’ll see that Google’s PageRank is actually 10. I’m just wondering (since PageRank is based on the votes from one website to another), is their PageRank calculated too, or is it set to a default 10?

Let there be no mistake — I love Google (and Lego), and would not live the life I’m living right now without them (just imagine the world without Gmail), and I don’t have the least doubt that Google.com is the most visited website on Earth (it’s ranked 2nd behind Yahoo on Alexa, though in my heart Google > Yahoo).

I don’t want to deny that they deserve a perfect 10, but since I didn’t find much information when I googled up «Is Google’s Page Rank 10?» (I of course got information regarding Google’s patented PageRank™ algorithm, but not a single clue about their website’s PR), I took a little of my time to run an investigation (yes… I used Google):

1. Google up «link: google.com»

Open Google and type that. You’ll find how many websites link to Google.com. Follow the link and see the websites. First there’s Adobe.com, which also has a PR 10. However, if you scroll a little bit down, or to the next page, you’ll find out that some of the top websites are not that popular, some even hitting a PR 4 or so. I’m not sure if websites are ordered from descending PR order, does anyone know?

2. Use SEOmoz’s Strength Tool:

I’m not very fond of SEO-related stuff, but their tool provides a lot of information (links from Yahoo, Technorati, del.icio.us, etc.) Funny thing is, SEOmoz is giving them a 9 out of 10! Anyway, what I did was to compare it with Digg (I find Digg and Google very similar, both sites have a high traffic and provide mostly links out). Digg’s PR is 8, and funny enough, their SEOmoz inbound links were close to 80% of what Google has in most of the case (in other cases it was very similar, in other ones Google was way ahead of Digg).

Still, I want to compare Google with other PR 10 websites, but that would be next time. I’m pretty curious about those inbound links… So, what do you think about it?
