Introducing the WebCloud!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Here’s my latest project on WebSoda: The WebCloud!

What’s the WebCloud anyway? Well, it’s the Top 50 website list on WebSoda.net, bigger websites represent websites with more votes, while those in vivid red are the ones with higher scores (either by Votes or Frequency).

One curious fact is that BodyBuilding.com is the most voted website (and has a very high score too). This is actually because the website was stickied in their forum, which generated many hundreds of votes. However, even though the websites are viewed on a random order, common websites such as YouTube, Wikipedia, Gmail, or Google, are quite big in the cloud too!

Google.com [9.5]: is it really a PageRank 10 website?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

We all know about Google’s PageRank system, and millions of websites are struggling in the war to compete for the top page on the Search Engine:

The Googlego logo

I mean, look it at it. Ten years ago (when Google was not worth $18bi), how would you convince your boss that it would be a good idea to buy stocks from a company whose logo is made out of Lego bricks? That’s why I love Google.

Google scores a clean 9.5 out of 10 from WebSoda’s rating (and don’t forget to vote! I promise it won’t take more than 5 seconds), and is viewed on a daily basis by all voters. I guess it’s really impressive to think that we are so dependent from Google!

I guess it’s no news that Google is ranked so high on WebSoda, but — here’s the real question: Is Google.com’s PageRank 10? If you install their toolbar, you’ll see that Google’s PageRank is actually 10. I’m just wondering (since PageRank is based on the votes from one website to another), is their PageRank calculated too, or is it set to a default 10?

New Vote and Skip icons

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Yesterday, I made a new Vote and Skip buttons for Websoda, since some visitors suggested me that it was not too clear what they were doing. Anyway here they are:

I also added Feedburner and Entrecard to my website, both great services that I was using before starting this blog. Also, if you’re too lazy as to insert a website, feel free to reply here and leave me the URL’s for your own website / other nice websites that you visit. I’ll take a look at them and insert them if they have good content :)

Hello world!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Welcome to the WebSoda blog! So, what’s this WebSoda thing about? It’s a (taken from the About page) repository or list of websites, which ranges from the most known websites to other less known ones. On our main page, you’re shown a different random website with a big thumbnail and a description. After seeing the website, you can cast your vote from 0 to 10 (10 being highest), and how frequent you see this website (if you knew it before seeing it here). After voting, you’ll get to see the website’s average score and frequency, and will be redirected to another random website.

If you’re a little lost, I invite you to check out a random website at WebSoda.net and you’ll get the point in no time :)

Votes

WebSoda was just released to the public and some websites already have more than 500 votes!

What about the website trends?

The real pupose of WebSoda’s blog (besides mentioning changes and features) is to analyze all the input received from users about websites (number of hits, score, and frequency for now). So, help us vote! It won’t take more than a minute!

Anyway, please let me know of any suggestions/feedback/anything :)
